I don’t know about you but I’ve discovered that aging has a strange effect on hair growth patterns. The quest for a way to remove unwanted hair begins in your teens. I can remember my father’s despair in the morning, as he found yet another blunt razor blade after I had used it to shave my legs the day before.

In my teenage days you shaved, plucked or used a depilatory cream. Thankfully times have changed and I would like to tell you that plucking (pulling hairs out with a pair of tweezers) is not for the faint hearted.

Shaving is ok and offers immediate results, but can cause some minor problems and skin irritation if the blade is not sharp enough, or you nick your skin with the razor, not to mention the “unhappy parent” thing. Then there’s the stubble and the fact that the hair “appears” to grow thicker.

I really believe that men don’t understand women and Hair Removal, as even today I have to smile as my husband states his opinion about many of the TV adverts for Hair Removal Products.

Depilatory creams are an excellent way to remove unwanted body hair but like the previous method the hair grows back. These creams are applied topically and left on for a few minutes according to instructions, and then wiped off. Hair growth is slower than shaving but the creams of old could cause skin reactions and the smell, not a nice one, lingered for the day.

These days, because I am not brave enough to try waxing, I am happy using a well-known natural hair removal spray in the shower. I find it simple, effective and safe enough to use once a week.

For those who wax, it gives good results and slows down hair growth but many find sugaring just as effective. Sugaring involves applying a paste made from sugar, water and lemon. I believe it has several advantages over waxing.

Firstly it is less painful as the paste only sticks to the hair and not your skin and then the paste is only warm, so there is no risk of burning the skin and less chance that it will become irritated. It is safe to use on any part of the body and the paste is easily removed with soap and water. Finally, Sugaring can be used on the shortest of hairs and the risk of ingrown hairs are less than with waxing.

As I mentioned earlier, age has a strange effect and spending years routinely removing hair from under arms, legs and bikini line. I find that menopause has more surprises for me, in the form of unwanted facial hair on the upper lip. Oh and if my mother is any sort of indicator, there are other stages to look forward to, so I had better keep an eye on my chin.

It’s really time for me to find a natural Permanent Hair Removal because enough is enough.

There are several options:

Threading is a procedure that uses natural cotton thread. It is twisted and pulled across the surface of the skin and lifts the hair directly out of the follicle. Apparently you only feel a slight pinch, there’s no damage to the skin and its possible to buy a DIY device to use at home.

I have also discovered that there is a new type of depilatory to remove hair permanently. They are made from exotic plant enzymes and once applied, these solutions saturate right down to the base of the hair follicle and stop hair growth. It’s totally organic and sounds just up my street as totally painless and safe. Not an overnight solution, as hair becomes thinner over weeks of application until growth stops completely, but a few weeks, I can handle.

Electrolysis removes hair permanently in most cases and the medical fraternity consider it more effective than costly laser treatments. It is suitable for hair on any part of the body, but works best for small areas. However there are side effects, skin redness and swelling and the information says permanent skin scarring is rare. Do I want to take a chance on “rare”?

Bleaching can tame unwanted hair and make it look less unsightly, but in my books, its still there, isn’t it.

Epilators can be used on most parts of the body and newer designs are available for facial hair. They are convenient to remove unwanted hairs quickly anytime and anywhere, but it’s not permanent.

IPL or intense pulsed light uses light devices similar to laser, but not laser to destroy part of the hair follicle and so impede growth. Four to six treatments are necessary to start with and then a top up as necessary. It can be painful and pricey, not what I call a great combination and raised red bumps on the skin for up to five days is even less appealing.
