Dirty Weekend Projects Abroad Volunteers Join the first "clean Cambodia

Assistant Country Manager, Jo Walton, who has worked in Cambodia our team after working for us in Sri Lanka for one year. Yeah weekend coordinated common "Dirty" in Sri Lanka – the concept of a large group of volunteers generally unpleasant, while helping one of our projects, cleaning, painting and many other activities. Here we say, the first Cambodian 'Dirty Weekend'.

The first release of our new brand projects abroad in the Dirty Weekend 'Cambodia is a' clean day in the orphanage lighthouse south of Phnom Penh.

Lighthouse orphanage is funded entirely by donations from tourists and therefore, different aspects are in a terrible state of disrepair. Children are happy, wonderfully friendly and most speak English ok, that's change! It is located in a spacious plot – there is a huge playground with a volleyball net, room in the concrete, small concludes some previous volunteers to create, and recently a French couple built a barn and spread to some pigs. The place is covered with asbestos, are children and play with them – a little girl to me the next day with a dinner to play along with some dried fish (asbestos) and lettuce (chopped nettles) and gave it to me. Nice.

Despite their huge smiles, some children here are rather dark. Many of them rotten teeth which are causing considerable trouble, and so we bought soap and toothpaste, and some volunteers have to learn the basics to keep clean. Older ones are pretty good, but some younger people are more flexible (of course, as You know five years is to be reminded to bathe?). And then, a team of volunteers started cleaning unenviable task children, money laundering all linens and blankets, and makes inspection and sorting bin at their worst clothes to scrub them, because we never saw! I really thought that they were really colorful blankets – SPIN so ingrained that I thought were really all shades of brown and gray. I've never seen so clean and so volunteers – None of them even had a traditional flip flop Dirty brands!

Another of the big problems is that the way to the bathroom, through pump, where the water is actually a pile of rubble and broken roof tiles raised for the children have been steadily decreasing their feet if they are they run, or whenever they want. Projects Abroad has won all the ingredients to build a proper concrete path along the surface. Startup bizarre dig a big hole in question and other transport more mud and broken tiles in this area (I know nothing about the specific things, but I'm not sure how I started!), and of course plenty of tea breaks, Projects Abroad Assistant Manager – Sophan, volunteers and two employees of the orphanage started.

Once they did, I was surprised to speed everything went down. At the end of day, they had a full path, about 1.5 m in diameter and 15 feet long, from the playground to the bathroom, around the pump. The boys, who worked to this deserves a medal! I've never seen people so sweat and not give up. I think Sam can move freely around Phnom Penh over the weekend use phrase "I'm everything you is" just as he likes, even after this effort!

Last obstacle is rubbish. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is too far from the main road to garbage disposal. Since they are not allowed to discharge the main road for collection, and provided that begin to separate and recycle more little hope, it was decided that the only alternative was left to burn. Not exactly my preferred method of evacuation of garbage is a little green beans, but let's face it, is Cambodia – anything another is simply not happen.

So we've hired some men to dig a deep hole in Nice burn garbage in the back of the rural the area near where children play. It was a slow start, I could be heard in various stages of the unique way Cambodian producers were even slower than their British counterparts, and I was cursing myself convinced that pay per day and not work. For the first few hours there was only a cat were transferred to four of them (despite the fact that there were three other spades leaning against a tree, they were Sat Smoking in ….), but once they started … .. I've never seen anything like it! In essence, they were digging a swimming Olympic pool in the back While I do not look! The hole proved to be a waste in a convenient location, as he appeared on the manager, who could double as pig manure runoff from the new barn – not that I think will make good manure for a while – they are soooo small!

Although we can not get recycling, we can separate them with raw foods and leaves to make their own compost at the farm. Some of the older volunteers created compost here, but due to strong wind and all types of plastics, and the fact that it did not cover the sun was cooking all day, not rotten to success. So we bought three old oil barrels with lids that can be completed in succession, so once the tank is full, the first is usually pretty empty fresh rotted compost, and start to fill again.

This was by far the hardest part of my list of foods to get your hands (except possibly NIT combs – try to explain what the thread is a man who thinks you're a little crazy without being stuck in the hair accessories section of the market is the Olympic impressions of small mistakes, and collection of demonstrations in some hair as a gorilla), so I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed when you arrive and they are always half full of oil. Far from it a little oil, to get in the way of Cambodian and Sophan (who is in his element with all that manhood and I have never seen so excited – and enthusiastically Default is the order we go through the roof), ran a little laundry soap and a rag, and I can prove that in fact (With plenty of water) to get oil drums.

After a short training session on what looks like asbestos, why You should not go near if you hit him, rain and heavy gloves and masks, all volunteers to participate in the final sweep the entire surface to remove all rubbish wind blows around the web. Currently, all children and their property, clean, compost all separated, the path is well on its way from over, and my destiny began to look a bit scruffy. So, I collect projects from each T-shirts abroad (including the idea was white, so that these?) to make a donation to my machine at home, I do not think he knew what hit him, and it's way back for a well-deserved shower.

All volunteers who attended the dinner on us, Therefore, thanks to everyone for their efforts. I'm not naive enough to think that you can change the world overnight, but we have some things to now in place we hope to encourage some grass roots change in the way they treat their waste is safe Children wash, and how children are involved in the process of washing and fun, we hope to motivate them to do it more often!

Thank you everyone who helped Mr Lee orphanage asked me to convey his thanks to you all – was really impressed by how each is stuck in!
